James Allen

James Allen was born in Leicester, England in November of 1864. At age 15, he was forced to abandon his schooling and become the man of the family when his father met an untimely demise in the United States. Allen worked for several British manufacturing companies until age 38.

With the dawning of a new century, Allen decided to move to the southwestern coast of England at Ilfracome. He devoted himself to the quiet, contemplative lifestyle of gardening, meditation, reading, and writing. He pursued a quest for spiritual truth, which led him to express his values and beliefs in his own writing. Allen believed that we are ultimately in control of our own destiny, that we are in fact masters of our destiny, and in his books he encourages his readers to take personal responsibility for their own lives.

Living a simple life in a place of natural beauty may have given Allen a sense of clarity that most of us don’t easily grasp. He studied the works of Tolstoy and the teachings of Buddha, among others, and freely welcomed people in a discussion of his philosophy.

Over the course of ten years, James Allen wrote a total of nineteen books. As a Man Thinketh was Allen’s second book, and it is considered to be his most enduring classic. Without the persistent encouragement of his wife, Lily, As a Man Thinketh might never have been published. Allen was a compassionate and gentle man, and it was his sincere hope that his works would inspire his readers to live a peaceful, successful, and happy life.

James Allen lived until 1912, but his potent works will remain with us forever.

Today's Quote
Man is made or unmade by himself. By the right choice he ascends. As a being of power, intelligence, and love, and the lord of his own thoughts, he holds the key to every situation.
